International Educational Services (IES) is a small, non-profit, non-governmental organization designed to serve the needs of villagers in Ghana, West Africa. Our programs and projects over the past sixteen years have mostly been targeted toward increasing enrollment and retention of impoverished children in school-especially girls-in Ghana village communities.
We work in partnership with parents, teachers and concerned local officials to design, implement, monitor and evaluate projects based on the needs of local children and their nurturing families.
IES is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501 (c)(3) and is classified as a public charity under Section 509 (a) (1) of the Internal Revenue Code. IES is also registered with the New York State Charities Bureau.
The projects and programs undertaken by International Educational Services are focused on impoverished rural communities, particularly women and children. We seek to improve economic empowerment of women through our Batik Training workshops, such as the one pictured above in Mafi Dadoboe, located in the Volta Region.
New school uniforms, donated to Yabraso Primary School in the Brong-Ahafo Region, is a commonly used IES program to encourage parents to send all of their eligible children to school. Their happy faces tell the story better than any words can!
IES philosophy dictates that children who are well-fed during the school day are much better learners than those who are not fed. Therefore, we provided a Feeding Program for all Yabraso students, which was sustained for two years. Fortunately, the Ghana Government has now established a free feeding program for all primary children throughout Ghana. After some initial stops and starts, the program has begun to reach the rural sector as well as the cities.
The teaching and learning environment is appropriate only when there are suitable desks for the entire class. This photo, taken at the Kwabenya Village Junior Secondary School in the Greater Accra Region, shows one very important part of an IES project which included a new junior high school block, school library, uniforms, sports equipment, and teaching and learning materials. Also important is the participation of villagers in decision-making-as seen below.
